Week 84: HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!!!

Hello everyone! This week was another adventure. On Monday we had a meeting with President Bangerter the whole day. He took us out to lunch to a nice healthy Chinese restaurant. After lunch we continued our meeting. We went over some mission matter and planned a few things that would be taking place in the next few weeks. On Tuesday we spent the whole day preparing materials. We printed out a lot of things for the traveling assistant to take to some zone conferences that would happen this week. I noticed how the last few weeks we had been more obedient to the rule of leaving the office at 5:00 pm to work in our area. We were blessed with a successful division. On Wednesday I had a division with the ward mission leader, and we taught a total of 7 lessons with him. It went great. I got to see new people that he introduced me to and I saw some parts of my area deep in the favela that i´ve surprisingly never been to still. You would imagine that after 8 months in the same area, i would have seen every road and alleyway that exists in my area! hahaha.
So yes, the missionary work is going well. We never have trouble finding people to teach. The problem is when the people we teach don´t want to keep commitments. These days, it seems like NO ONE is reading what we leave them, praying, or going to church. We invite them, and show them all the blessings that come from reading, praying and going to church, but they don´t seem to have desire to do anything. So we are teaching lots of lessons, and talking to lots of people, but they are all pretty weak investigators. We are teaching two guys that are good. William and Lucas. William is 15 and is doing well. He reads and will go to church with us on Sunday, He was going to go with us last sunday, but when we showed up at his house in the morning, his grandma had just died in his house so he stayed home to help out with all that business. But this week he is confirmed to go with us. We are trying to teach another kid named Cristiano. He is 16 years old and has lots of friends who are members. He plays soccer weekly at the Amaralina chapel and hangs out with other boys who are members. He has been to church several times and we taught him some lessons, but he seems to hesitate when we talk about baptism. He understood why he needs to be baptized again and told us that the only problem now is convincing his mom to let him be baptized. She is from a different church and seems to always find excuses to why she is too busy to talk to us. We just need to have a good talk with her and explain a few things to help her understand why her son needs to be baptized.
Thursday was a normal day. Office work, then we taught a few lessons before our dinner appointment with Romilda. Friday I picked up Elder Dos Santos at the Hospital who had a hernia surgery. He was in a lot of pain and can´t walk very much. I had to stay with him at the office all afternoon and night. Elder Cantuário and Elder Prince went to the Bank, the other mission´s office, Rodoviaria, then to our area and taught three lessons. Meanwhile I was stuck in the office doing some financial favors for Elder Cantuário and watching over Elder Dos Santos. We bought Elder Dos Santos a new bed mattress because he will be staying at our apartment while he recovers and there weren´t enough. We are really looking forward for the guys who are reforming our house to really get on it, because very little progress has happened and President Bangerter isn´t happy with it. We have been sleeping on our mattresses on the ground for 6 weeks and the apartment isn´t looking very good. President wants it to look like a hotel to have the new missionaries that arrive in the mission to stay in, but I don´t know how well that is going to work out. It doesn´t look that much different since the reform started. Saturday morning Elder Prince went with Elder Cantuário to get a haircut. I called Eddy to take Elder Dos Santos and I to the pharmacy to buy some things for Elder Dos Santos, then we headed on to the office. I was happy to have received an email from my 2 little sisters. I was also able to chat with my dad for a bit, and write my mom a belated birthday email. We had lunch in Santa Cruz´s area, then returned to the office. Overall it was a good p-day. Relaxed and slow paced, but enjoyable. We hope to have some investigators in church. This is going to be one of last chances of getting investigators to come to church on Sundays for a while since Carnival is starting. I believe Carnival will be starting towards the beginning of February. On February 2nd there will be a HUGE annual party at a park that we pass by every night at the end of our day. Then during the rest of the month there are parties all the time. There is one week with the biggest parties. It will be crazy, and I´ve heard they aren´t pretty, so we need to talk to president and ask him what we should do. Maybe work the day and stay in the office or at home at night.
So things are going pretty well as a missionary. I still don´t know where I will be transferred to. We are starting our 4th week of this transfer which means we have 3 more weeks until this transfer is over.  I am anxious to know where I will go. I can´t wait to be able to dedicate ALL my time to teaching and baptized, without being hindered by office duties. Although I will miss the office, I will love being a full time "normal missionary" . . I´m grateful to be a missionary during this time. I love Brazil and its people. I can say that i´m trunky to go home, but it´s not affecting my desire to work and be a missionary. I can´t wait to have my parents come pick me up, then go home and move on in my life with college, marriage, work, etc. There is an exciting chapter of my life awaiting me, but I want to do all I can to make this chapter the best it can. The opportunity to be a full time missionary is unique and special. Anyone who has served a mission can attest to that. Thanks to everyone who prays for the missionaries serving in the world. We appreciate all you do to support us and love us. I know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is Christ´s church and that the ordinances that help us earn our salvation were restored to the Earth. The news of the restored Gospel are the happiest ever! That´s why being a missionary is so awesome! Have a great week!

Week 82: Another awesome week

Hey fam. How was your week? Mine was very busy, being the week of transfers and mission council. Early Monday morning we picked up Elder Prince at the bus station and returned home to get ready for the day. We spent a lot of time at the bus station buying bus passes for missionaries that would be traveling this week. We also spent a lot of time preparing the office for this transfer too. I finalized lots of flight plans and made departure packets for missionaries going home, and I made arrival packets for arriving missionaries. That evening we had a family night at Angelo´s house with his mom. He wanted us to teach him how to do a family night, so he can do them with his family weekly at his house. Everything went pretty smoothly during transfers. President made some last minute changes to the transfer (like usual) so that only caused a few problems. 10 new missionaries arrived this week and ten left the mission.

On Tuesday we went to the airport to drop off a short term missionary that was going home. Then we stayed at the airport and waited for President Bangerter to arrive to greet the new missionaries. The flight came in at 9:20 am. and we saw them all get their bags and pass to our side. We gave them all hugs (except the sister haha) and welcomed them to the mission. There were 5 Elders and 5 Sister. Then we ate a snack and headed to the mission home, where they spent the day being trained. Elder Cantuário and I had to go back to the office a few times to grab some stuff.
Wednesday we prepared for the mission council. Around 7:30 pm we went to Romilda´s house  and left a message and had dinner. On Thursday at 6:30 am Elder Cantuário took two elders to the airport. Their plane left earlier so they left first. Later at 8:30 am Elder Prince and I took the rest of the departing missionaries to the airport in a large van to fit all the bags. Elder Estevam went with Eddy to have his last taxi ride with him. I gave him my camera to record a few things on the way to the airport. He is hilarious. We will all miss him a lot.  We took pictures at the airport, eddy carlos cried, and we headed back to the mission home for mission council.

Friday we had district meeting in the morning. I gave a training on how to do an effective family night with members and make a big list of references with that family. Then Elder Prince and Elder Cantuário went to pay the Valença home owner lady while I stayed in the office with Elder Pereira and Elder Saavedra. We left to our area around 5:30 pm and taught a total of 7 lessons. It is great with Elder Prince. I am teaching him how to do everything here. He is cool. I am also helping him relearn some piano since we have a small keyboard at our house. Our house has been being reformed for over 4 weeks and not much has changed.. Seriously, President Bangerter is expecting a lot out of it and I think he will be disappointed because it hasn´t really changed that much. He said he wants it to look as nice as a hotel when it is finished so he can have the new missionaries spend the night in it when they arrive. I can´t wait to see that happen. haha.
This will be my last 5 weeks here as secretary. I love being a secretary. It has been an incredible opportunity and a learning stretch for me. I have gotten closer to the mission president. We do a lot of work for him and behind the scenes work to make the mission run smooth. I´m excited to be passing some responsibilities to Elder Prince, so he can learn how to do things.

This week I am extra grateful for living prophets. I am happy for President Thomas S. Monson. Although he has passed away, I know he is in a great place helping other people know Christ´s church. I am grateful for Thomas S. Monson´s great example of selfless service and love for others. I´m excited for the next general conference to sustain the Lord´s next prophet.
I love you family.  Have a great week!

Week 81: Make It Simple, But Significant

This week was fairly simple. It was the 6th and last week of this transfer. I spent a lot of time preparing for arriving missionaries and missionaries going home. I printed lots of things and prepared lots of materials, confirmed flight plans, etc. I didn´t take a single picture this whole week, so I don´t have much to send. On Friday, President did interviews here in the office and Sister Bangerter brought cinnamon rolls. Then later that same day Sister Briggs arrived and brought Banana bread with chocolate! We are so lucky! hahaha.
I am super excited for this next transfer. I can´t wait to start training the next secretary. I will pass all the responsibility to him and help him learn to do it. I will train him better than I was trained. It is crazy how after this transfer, I will be leaving the office and return back to the "normal missionary life". I am pretty ready, since I´ve been here since June. In February, when i leave, I will have been here for 9 months! That is a long time!
That was my week. Very simple, but to me it was significant. A lot of good things happened during this week that I am grateful for. I hope that this next week is even better. I love you family!

Week 80: “Peace on Earth will come to stay, When we live Christmas every day.”

This week was great! On Monday we ate breakfast at the Briggs apartment. We had eggs, bacon and pancakes. Later that evening I got to skype my family and talk to them for a bit. It was a great time.
Monday and Tuesday we didn´t get to work much in our area, because of office duties. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we "caught back up" and were blessed to teach a lot of people. We met some good people that I believe can be good investigators. Nothing very exciting happened this week. Something interesting that happened this week? When we were in the favella on Friday the power kept going out. It gets really dark without light and it´s a bit scary haha. We wer looking for a certain person. We couldn´t kind her address because the favella isn´t the most organized neighborhood. We were wandering down an alleyway and the power had gone out. There was a woman sit on her doorstep. We were going to simply pass, but my companion stopped and talked to her. Guess who it was? It was Clarissa, the lady we were looking for. We had a good conversation about prophets, faith, and the importance of prayer. Another interesting thing that happened was when we were walking to lunch on Saturday and I found 5 Reias! It was in a Macumba offering on the side of the road, but to me it didn´t matter. I hope I didn´t pick up an evil curse or something.
We aren´t doing anything for p-day because we didn´t plan anything. We had an awesome lunch at Romilda´s house. She prepared a big feast!
I am excited for this new year. It is an opportunity to start fresh. We can review the past year and see how we can improve, then make appropriate goals. I really love the quote of the title. “Peace on earth will come to stay, When we live Christmas every day.” I believe in this. When we have the christmas spirit everyday, imagine how much happier we would be. It seems like during the Christmas season, everyone is happier, more receptive, and giving. Its a season of giving and service. Forgetting about ourselves. I know that we can remember Christ at every moment in our lives and in doing so, we will become happier people. I know that Jesus Christ loves us. I feel His love radiate through the prophets, apostles and all his dear children. We all have some degree of Christ´s light within us. We just need to open up and let it SHINE! Show your good works, and feel your testimony GROW! I am grateful for the pure gospel on the Earth and I testify that it is true.

Love, Elder Hilton
